Your Views About Podcasts Are Wrong

InsightsThere is more to podcasting than meets the ear
If you are in marketing, your views about podcasts are wrong…
Wrong might not be the best word choice. Shortsighted might be better. Want to find out why?
Let’s start with a simple exercise. Close your eyes and think of a TV show…
Did you think of a talk show like Good Morning America or The View? Probably not…
Now think of a podcast. I bet you thought of a show that has at least one host and brings on guests discussing various topics. There is not just one type of TV show. Why do most of us only imagine one type of podcast?
If you do a little searching, you can quickly find that other types of podcasts exist. These podcasts are often stories in episodic formats (true crime, history, even fiction). Some of my favorites in this category are Founders, How to Take over the World, Serial, and Crimetown.
If these others types of podcasts exist, why don’t we hear more about them? It’s probably because they don’t get tens of millions of listens. If you are in marketing though, you probably don’t need tens of millions of listens. You might be happy with thousands… or even hundreds.
Tell your story
If you have a story to tell, you shouldn’t limit yourself to the common approach. It’s okay to be uncommon. If you are considering a podcast, consider telling your story on your terms. Maybe it’s the history of the company or the product. Maybe it’s industry education. The point is you can find something that resonates with your brand and your mission. Audio is just a medium and podcast networks are just a distribution channel for your story.
I know what you are thinking. Podcasts are expensive and time consuming to produce. On top of that, they are difficult to measure. This is absolutely true. That being said, podcasts are one of the easiest ways for you to become part of a person’s daily routine. Ask a few friends if they listen to podcasts. If they do, ask them when and where. They will almost all be able to tell you the times and places they listen to podcasts. I bet it will be alarmingly consistent. You have the opportunity to become part of that routine… if your story is good enough.
